Tips for Hiring a Paint Contractor
By Steve Skarritt
Start with asking friends, family, co-workers, etc. if they know or have used someone that customer satisfaction was a priority in the way that they worked. Painting is a trade where its very easy to screw up and many people have had bad experiences because of this.
When you hear of a good painting contractor, still be sure and do your own homework. Check them out at the BBB as they have reviews on all company's in your area. In this day and age you can also go online and find reviews on most anything. Make an appointment for an estimate of what you want done and have your list of questions to ask at that time. Make sure you're comparing apples to apples as this will need to be equal for fair comparison of prices.
Ask for references and call some and if possible see if you can visit a job. References is a way almost for a contractor to brag about their work and if they don't offer them, theres a reason. Punctual, a contractor who keeps their appointment and is on time is more likely to be on time to do the work and complete the job on time.
Communication, if a contractor doesn't answer his phone or return his calls regarding estimate, questions, scheduling, etc., it could be the same after the job is started. The Proposal, is it well written and with full description of job that is to be done. Are brand and grade of materials in the proposal. If you have questions or want changes made, this is when you ask for the proposal to be revised. The proposal speaks volumes about the professionalism of the contractor. You'll always be able to find somebody cheaper and someone more costly, just make sure you're getting the most for your money in quality by what materials are used, contractors experience, and warranty.
